Cloud Data Makers @ Google, London

Overview

Ryan Thornley, our new Head of GCP Engineering, shares an overview of the first in a series of "Cloud Data Makers" events, hosted at Google in London. This event series explores data and analytics on Google Cloud Platform, and how to get started on your journey as efficiently as possible.

A little late to write this blog post perhaps, but a company kickoff in Alicante does tend to take one's eyes off the ball and into the bar, on an evening or two!

On the 12th of May, I attended the first of the Cloud Data Makers events at the Google offices down in London, with a number of my new colleagues at CTS, having recently joined the team as Head of GCP Engineering.

For context, this is how I rounded up my second week at CTS. It's been a whirlwind tour of meeting new people, and learning new things, as I shift my skill set over into the world of Google Cloud Platform, from Amazon Web Services. Now seems like a sensible time to thank all my new colleagues for the warm welcome - the passion and expertise of all the engineers and architects at CTS is clear in every piece of work they undertake, and I’m incredibly excited to see what the future holds for all of us.

Getting down to the event was an excellent reminder of pre pandemic life. As a fully remote worker for the past few years, it would be easy to groan about the prospect of travelling half the length of the country for an event - but once the event got into full swing, it's easy to see why it's worth making the effort.

So what is the Cloud Data Maker series? It’s a tour of GCP data and analytics services split across four events. The goal? To outline the steps required to go from zero, to a full featured data pipeline in GCP, with hands-on sessions and demos provided by Google Premier Partners. The first event was titled “How to effectively onboard data into GCP”, and the partners were SoftServe and CTS.

Our CTS presentation was run by Sean Gilley and James Gornall and explored the data ingestion foundations using the titanic manifest as a sample. On day zero of any data journey it can be daunting to work out where you place that first step, and their presentation was designed to show people how quickly you can go from nothing, to being able to train an ML model against the manifest. This wasn't death by powerpoint, but rather a real demonstration of the process required at each step with some tips from the experts mixed in, to avoid any potential pitfalls.

Through the use of Google Cloud Storage, Dataflow, Big Query and Cloud AI, the pair demonstrated in real time how quick and simple it can be to process that titanic manifest into the GCP data toolset. The Cloud AI tool proved to be particularly powerful when used against the manifest to predict the likelihood of survival based on a few inputs such as age, sex and ticket class (Spoiler alert: Neither James or Sean made it!).

What was the takeaway? It’s that these tools have as low a barrier to entry as possible. You can sign up for GCP and start experimenting with some data today. Once you’ve seen the benefits on a smaller scale, you can easily imagine the possibilities GCP can bring to your organisation. That's not all though, there are plenty more points to cover off on how to mature a data pipeline into production. If you can, I would encourage you all to sign up to the remaining three events, and I look forward to meeting you there.

.. and finally, for anybody who signs off expenses. It's much safer if we all travel 1st class!
