Google Cloud and CTS to deliver cloud modernisation for JPIMedia

Thinking Big

Our High Velocity Migration will accelerate JPI's IT modernisation on Google Cloud Platform

Beyond Migration

An ongoing series of modernisation projects will ensure optimisation is a mainstay

Sustainability

This initiative will help to lower JPIs carbon footprint and improve operational efficiency

CTS has teamed up with JPIMedia, the organisation behind some of the UK’s best known regional newspapers and websites, to help them to think big about their IT infrastructure.

As part of the engagement, CTS will be leading a High Velocity Migration to Google Cloud and subsequently working on an accelerated programme to modernise JPI’s IT, further improve its operational efficiency, reducing its costs and carbon footprint.

The appointment follows JPIMedia’s acquisition by National World earlier this year. It’s designed to help the publisher, which owns regional newspapers including The Scotsman, The Yorkshire Post and Portsmouth News, further digitise elements of its business and shape the world of local news.

Three migration stages

The migration will consist of three key stages: an initial Discovery phase, run over eight weeks to define the scope and stages of the cloud migration; the Horizon 1 phase, where CTS and Google  Cloud migrate all existing on-premises workloads into the cloud; and lastly, Horizon 2, where an ongoing series of modernisation projects will help optimise the environment and applications.

“We’re excited to begin this long term partnership, which will enable us to work smarter and more efficiently,” says David Martin, Chief Technology Officer at JPIMedia. He explains, "maintaining the momentum of infrastructure improvement is essential and we are looking forward to enhancing our digital capabilities, ensuring we can adapt to the ongoing changes and opportunities that arise.”

Investment in further modernisation

The savings achieved through each project in Horizon 2 will then be reinvested in further modernisation initiatives to help JPI continually improve its cloud infrastructure.

This approach is geared to drive value from the changes swiftly to ensure that optimisation is a mainstay of the programme, and not something which will be forgotten.

Tom Ray, Managing Director at CTS, said “Too often we see businesses that take the approach that once they have migrated to the cloud, their modernisation journey is complete. In partnership with Google Cloud, we’re challenging customers to think bigger and evolve an IT estate that is optimised in terms of cost and fit-for-purpose for the future of their businesses.”

Innovative funding models

CTS works with their strategic partners to leverage innovative funding models, helping to overcome the initial investment hurdle which can often be prohibitive to organisations.

JPIMedia will use the savings created by the programme to grow digital content, using enhanced digital technology. The modernisation will also enable it to provide improved subscription models to customers seeking local news in their areas.

Lucy Thornton, Head of Business Development, Technology Solutions UK/IE at Google Cloud, said: "Together, JPI Media, CTS and Google Cloud took pressing business challenges and pivoted them into a transformational program of work focused on application modernisation, and a data-driven culture.”
